Ron Rivera benched the player for the first offensive play of the game against the Seattle Seahawks for not wearing a tie on travel day to Seattle. The Carolina Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera requires his team to wear ties on game days. The tie simply didn’t match his wardrobe for the day. It’s not like he intentionally broke the team rules. Newton failed to pack his collared shirt and he couldn’t wear a tie without a collared shirt, right? The black turtleneck and blazer couldn’t have accommodated a tie. Newton’s wardrobe selection has been very stylish and he’s known to transcend, so maybe the stylish trendsetter could have pulled it off. Since his NFL debut, Cam Newton’s style has taken on an evolution of its own. The athlete’s bold wardrobe keeps the fashion critics busy but it doesn’t seem to bother him much. However, Newton’s never been benched as punishment for fashionable sense either. Ron Rivera critiquing his wardrobe may alter his apparel selection moving forward. After the game, Newton explained that he respected the coaches decisions. Newton explained that the issue was “a lack of communication on my part.I have to be clearer moving forward on how certain things are done.” After all, the players shipped most of their clothes back to North Carolina after being in California for over a week. A wardrobe malfunction was bound to happen with at least one of the players on the team with the hectic packing schedule. “I felt like I wore a similar outfit to this before and nothing was said,”stated Newton, “but [Rivera] has rules in place, and I have to abide by them. No person is greater than the next person.” Well said !
