Hailing from Missouri City, Texas, Travis Scott has this generation by its throat and, with the release of his new album titled Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, Travis is only further cementing his name in the rap game.

Before Travis Scott became a millionaire rapper, he was a college kid just like us. Finals, group projects and homework were no stranger to Travis. While attending The University of Texas, Travis pursued his passion for music against the wishes of his parents.

Even though Travis comes from a line of musical talented people, his parents didn’t want him to follow those dreams. Instead, they wanted him to go to school, get a degree and get a lucrative job. However, Travis had other plans.

While in school, Travis would use the money his parents gave him for books to buy beats, plane tickets and anything else he needed to further fund his passion.

After two years of college, Travis finally dropped out and bought a plane ticket to New York City without the knowledge of his parents. Imagine their surprise when they came to visit him one weekend, only to find he wasn’t even in the same city or enrolled in college.

When his parents realized Travis was in NYC, they cut him off financially. After three months of struggling and living with friends, Travis left cold, aggressive New York for the sunny, happy vibes in Los Angeles, California.

The time Travis spent perfecting his craft in New York garnered him enough attention and lead to T.I asking for him to come by the studio to work.

This was only the beginning. Travis Scott’s musical talent eventually reached the ears of Kanye and he was immediately flown out to New York to work with Kanye.

Travis recalled in a Billboard article how his first time meeting with Kanye went. “First thing he gave me was a Doritos taco from Taco Bell. He’s like, ‘Yo you want a taco?’ I was like, ‘Yeah!’ He gave it to me on this fancy ass platter, like some Hermes shit. What’s crazy is, I don’t eat like sour cream,” said Travis.

Now lets’ fast forward to Travis Scott’s newest release, Bird in the Trap Sing McKnight. The album was released on September 2nd to a hungry fan base. The success from Travis’s last album, Rodeo, left fans eager and ready for more new music.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait too long for it. So, where exactly did Travis get the title of his album from? According to the same Billboard interview, Scott shared that the title of his album had absolutely nothing to do with Brian McKnight.

Travis stated, “Nothing to do with Brian McKnight, but the title came from me, Quavo and [Young] Thug working on ‘Pick Up the Phone.’ Young Quavius was rapping, bouncing off ideas, and I was letting him know the story and the vibe of my album so when he was doing his verse, dude just says ‘Birds in the trap sing Brian McKnight.’ I ran in the booth and I was like, ‘Bro, this is it!’.”

That’s the thing about being an artist, you have artistic freedom. You don’t have to conform or explain you’re reasoning for things; all you have to do is express your artistic capabilities.

As for the trap part, Scott told Billboard that line is a reference to how he felt “confined in a box” because the release of some of his work was taking longer than he wanted. Nevertheless, album is a musical masterpiece and deserves a good listen.

Travis Scott is a musical genius in his own right. Nothing he puts out is short of phenomenal. With features from Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar, Bryson Tiller, The Weekend, Young Thug, Cassie, Quavo, 21 Savage and Kid Cudi this star studded album is surely not one to miss out on.
