Despite the debate on the authenticity of MUA’s among millennials, Summer Bell emerges to bring individuality, passion, and sass to her makeup artistry. Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Atlanta, Bell is a triple threat: a self-taught makeup artist, beauty influencer, and the owner of the YouTube channel, StyleBySummer. When Summer isn’t being the girl boss that she is, you can catch her studying at The University of Alabama or jammin’ to Diva by the Queen B herself.

Q: For those who may not know you, how would you introduce yourself?

A: Hey guys, I’m Summer! I’m a self-taught makeup artist who specializes in bridal, stage, and special effects makeup; beauty influencer, and beauty YouTuber!

Q: Where are your from/Where are you currently residing?

A: I was born in Washington, D.C., raised in Atlanta, GA, currently attending school at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Q: If you could describe your personality in three words, what would they be?

A: Forgiving, motivated, optimistic

Q: When did you know that being an MUA was what you wanted to do?

A: I knew I found a passion in doing makeup when I saw how others reacted to it whenever I finished working on them, you never know true happiness until you can bring it to others.

Q: What was your process of becoming an MUA? Did you have any professional training?

A: I am a self-taught freelance makeup artist

Q: What are some of your goals as an MUA?

A: To stay consistent with my work and keeping my content fresh. I always aspire to inspire!

Q: What sets you apart from other MUAs?

A: Majority of my looks are inspired from social events, people, etc. I would rather have my work touch someone who isn’t even interested in makeup in a passionate way, to where even they say, “wow this is amazing.”

Q: What is your opinion on some of these high-end make-up companies not appealing  to women of color?

A: Of course, I hate it and of course it makes trying out new products more difficult because those products don’t suit my tone, but it’s also a learning experience for brands to see what they need to work on and see who their consumers are.

Q: Give us some background on StyleBySummer?

A: Stylebysummer started as a YouTube channel based solely on fashion in 2013, but eventually evolved into beauty tips and tutorials around 2015.

Q: What is the hardest part about creating tutorial videos?

A: As more and more people are getting into making tutorials, the competition to put out the most

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years with your MUA career?

A: In five years, I hope to be launching my own line of cosmetics after growing my audience and clientele over the years.

Q: Aside from being a MUA, is there anything else that you do?

A: Because of me also being a youtuber, I am always having to put my video filming and editing to the test; being a videographer would be pretty neat!

Q: Is there anything your supporters should be looking out for, or is there anything you would like them to know?

A: I am going to be working with a number of brands and other artists to come out with some new content!
