img_3511Born in New Jersey, raised in North Carolina, Clifford Owens, also known as OG Spliff, is paving his way in the hip-hop game with his unique perspective on life/the world, means to relate to the struggling youth of this generation, and his dope lyricism. Two months ago, Spliff debuted his EP, Skreet Vol. 1, a three piece EP, produced by names such as pm. and KEATON. As Artist of the Week, Owens gives us insight on his history with music, what it means to him, and what’s in store, not only for his life, but his life in music. 


Q: What is the meaning behind your stage name, OG Spliff? 

A: “Original Guru Spliff” – Just tryna spread some love in this world while accepting the balance of man’s vices & virtues. 



Q: For those who do not know you, or what you do, give us a little background on who OG Spliff is? 

A: Born in New Jersey, raised in North Carolina, and currently residing in Delaware. Og Spliff is a recording artist inspired by Hip Hop, his life & environment.



Q: When did you realize that music is what you wanted to do? 

A: I’ve always had a love for music but, I decided that this was gonna pay a nigga’s bills around 17 when I didn’t have a strong interest in doing anything else. 



Q: What does music mean to you? 

A: Music, just like any art, is a reflection of God. It encompasses all walks of life and allows people of different worlds to understand & communicate with each other 



img_3797-copyQ: Aside from rapping, what other aspects of music are you interested in? 

A: All aspects/genre’s. Engineering & Production. I also want to get in film scoring, eventually. 



Q: Are you a student? Part/full-time worker? 

A: I used to go to school. I might go back, if ma dukes has her way. Right now i’m a full time hustler just trying get this money & blow it all in the studio.



Q: Do you write your own lyrics? 

A: Yes, as long as I do music, I plan to write my own lyrics. I’d potentially be interested in writing for someone else though.



Q: When it comes to your music, what process do you usually take to write your lyrics? 

A: Usually roll one, drink a lil bit, succumb to my vices and seclude myself from everything. Get everything on my mind out on to the paper. 



Q: Who are some artists that you would love to work with in the future? 

A: RZA, MF Doom, Earl sweatshirt, Kid Cudi, Chief Keef, Travis Scott, Yeezy, Lil B the BasedGod, Xavier Wulf, Zeroh, Gorillaz, Erykah Badhu, Lauryn Hill, Alchemist, Madlib, G Herbo, Flying Lotus, Larry Fisherman, and many more.



Q: What do you see for yourself in the future? 

A: Me making enough money off my music & touring, so my family & friends ain’t gotta worry bout shit. I want to start a non-profit studio for upcoming artist and eventually score my first movie. Most important I see myself still learning because you can always grow! 



img_4779Q: Do you have any goals for the remainder of 2016? 2017? 

A: Keep putting out music, work on these two EP’s I’ve been planning, and get this money. 



Q: Since the release of “Practice” a year ago, how have you grown musically with your release SKREET Vol.?

A: I’ve learned more about production and am closer to finding my sound. 



Q: How would you describe Practice, Late Nights, and SKREET Vol. 1? 

A: Those releases are old but are still apart of me and always will be. 



Q: What do you hope to gain from your music career? 

A: It used to be validation from my idols but, then I grew up and realized all I need is this money for me and my loved ones. I also want to be able to help people with my music going through any kind of struggle and let different people communicate with each other. 



Q: What sets you apart from other musicians/rappers in this generation? 

A: I’m a real boy.



Q: Have you done any recent performances? If not, do you plan on doing any time soon? Potentially a tour? 

A: I just did the Shrieking Showcase in Raleigh,NC and have a show coming up in Winston-Salem being planned. I do all my booking myself, currently, so I’m always on the lookout to do more shows and hopefully a tour soon. 


Q: What is the best part about being a musician/rapper? 

A: Being able to speak your mind and connect with your fellow fucked up individuals.



Q: What is one of your favorite songs that you have recorded? 

A: Hasn’t been released yet 😉
