The “funky diabetic,” Malik Taylor, also known as Phife Dawg, resonated the world with his clever, creative rhymes that brought success to A Tribe Called Quest.

The Hip-Hop community is  shaken by the disheartening news that Jamaican, Queens native, Phife Dawg, passed away Wednesday at the age of 45. Though the cause of his death is undetermined, Taylor has had a long battle with Type 1 Diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant in 2008.

Globally, people have been sharing their condolences and respect for the legendary artist through Twitter, where Phife is now trending. Though the cause of his death is undetermined, Taylor has had a long battle with Type 1 Diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant in 2008.

A Tribe Called Quest, which was formed in the 1980s, became one of the most respected Hip-Hop trios in the industry for their stimulating lyrics and jazz-infused hip-hop production. Shortly after, the group signed to Jive Records and released the first of their five albums, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm in 1990, a classic known to many around the world.

ATCQ may have broken up several times and reunited, but perhaps the biggest reunion was last November, when Tribe decided to re-release their debut album for the 25th anniversary and performed “Can I Kick It” on the Tonight Show, not knowing that this would be the final performance they would have together.

Phife Dawg may not be here physically, but his spirit and legacy will continue to live on to inspire people and his music will forever be in our hearts.
