What does it mean to be a carefree black girl? To have a septum piercing? To say goodbye to weave and perms and rock your natural hair? To take photos in the park doing yoga? To go braless with nipple piercings on social media? To eat fruits and veggies and juice every day? Taking pictures with flowers in your afro?  To stop contouring and go barefaced? Are these the things that make a carefree black girl? I mean yes these might be the aesthetics we see on social media, but being a carefree black girl is deeper than just physical features.

Let me break it down for you. Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Ciara, Beyonce: Carefree Black girls. Jhene Aiko, Lupita Nyong’o, Solange, Janelle Monae, Amandla: Carefree black girls. See what I did there? Some of us carefree black girls rock weaves. Some of us rock our natural hair.

There is no right or wrong way to be a carefree black girl. You don’t have to change the way you look to fit into the carefree black girl aesthetic. All you have to do is BE YOU. The CFBG movement is supposed to showcase all varieties of black women because we are all so different. You don’t have to conform to any aesthetic to be looked at as a CFBG, that’s the opposite of what this movement is all about!

To me, a carefree black girl is someone who is comfortable in their own skin. To me a careful black girl is someone who is intertwined with her deepest thoughts and knows what she wants out of life. To me a carefree black girl is one with her spirituality. To me a carefree black girl is living for her self and loving herself unapologetically. To me the carefree black girl dances to the beat of her own drum. A carefree black girl doesn’t CARE about the stereotypes that society tries to enforce about black women.  And  yes there are some moments when we’re not as carefree as we want to be and that’s OKAY. No matter what stage of life you are in, you’re constantly growing and figuring things out about yourself.

Being a carefree black girl is what YOU make it. Live the life YOU want to live and savor those carefree moments. In fact, you can even drop the CFBG label and just BE. So love yourself, experience different things, burst out of your comfort level and more so, do it unapologetically .
