When I heard that there was a remake of Roots and a new show called The Underground coming out I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. I mean I was sick and tired of watching slave movies and tv shows, it was like that was all the media was feeding us. I couldn’t even get through 12 years of slave without bawling my eyes out. Our ancestors were enslaved, brutalized, and treated worse than cattle on a farm! I was sick, SICK of watching the pain even though it was fake. I want more movies about black lives after slavery. A coming of age story about a black teen who loved skateboarding! Anything! We have more stories to tell than the same old slavery ones, you know?

But then I took a step back and looked at the bigger picture.

No, our history didn’t start with slavery but it is an important part of our history here in America and it is crucial that it is remembered, no matter how gruesome. The reason why I say this is because as time goes on, we must make sure the story of ancestors isn’t being watered down. This superficial depiction of slavery is exactly why we need numerous slave movies and tv shows, to show our kids, our grandkids, and our great grandkids how real it was.

Lastly, I had to realize that the production of slave movies and shows in no way prevents the production of other genres of black movies. We can have slave movies in theatres along with romantic black comedies, and so forth.
